Trunk or Treat
The Buzz
More than 350 students and their families attended Wimbish Elementary’s annual trunk or treat event. Teachers and staff handed out candy, the PTA hosted games, and many students entered the pumpkin-decorating and costume contests. Even Principal Russ Berrong participated, dressed as a yellow crayon!
 
Pink Wednesdays
The Buzz
Bowie High School IB students are participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in April. To prepare, they have set a goal to do something for the cause every month, and the Key Club and AVID have joined in on the project. Staff and students were asked to wear pink every Wednesday in October to support this effort.
 
Continuing Education

State Representative Diane Patrick hosted the third annual Education Policy Summit at the University of Texas at Arlington on Monday, Oct. 19. Pictured are Arlington Chamber CEO Wes Jurey, Tarrant County College Southeast Campus President Judith Carrier, Rep. Patrick, Texas Higher Education Commissioner Raymund Paredes, Texas Education Deputy Commissioner Raymond Glynn, UTA President Jim Spaniolo and AISD Superintendent Jerry McCullough.
 
Paranormal Activity
The Buzz
Katie Featherston, Bowie High School class of 2001, is starring in the new movie Paranormal Activity. Steven Spielberg helped produce the finished product and even re-edited the ending before its release. Featherston was the star of Bowie’s 2001 UIL One Act Play, Wit, which advanced to region. She won best actress at zone, district and area levels. She majored in acting at Southern Methodist University.
 
Memories in the Making

On Friday, Oct. 16, Rankin Elementary celebrated a milestone – their 50th anniversary. The ceremony included students placing contributions in a time capsule and a style show of Rankin shirts throughout the years. After the formal ceremony, festivities continued with the annual math carnival.
 
Grant Recipient
The Buzz
Carter Junior High science instructional facilitator Mark Castillo accepted his AISD Education Foundation grant award from State Representative Diane Patrick. His grant is entitled FIRST Lego League Robotics and will provide students the opportunity to design and build a robot as well as compete in a regional competition.
 
Recognized Campuses
The Buzz
Faculty and staff at TEA Recognized campuses are being honored with a reception at their campus. Superintendent Jerry McCullough passes out cookies to the staff prior to the reception. Pictured is the reception at Dunn Elementary.
 
Cookies for Soldiers
The Buzz
The food science and nutrition classes at Seguin High School baked oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and sent them to U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan. The cookies were vacuum-sealed in individual packages with a personalized Thanksgiving note attached. The shipping cost for the three boxes of treats was donated by the Seguin faculty and staff.

“It felt good making cookies for someone that’s fighting for us and risking their lives,” junior Dominique W. said. “Making the cookies for the soldiers was fun.”

 
Special Guest
The Buzz
Principal Rhonda Greer welcomed Bruce Ashworth as the special guest speaker at the Ashworth PTA meeting in September. Mr. Ashworth shared stories of his father, Judge Clyde R. Ashworth, the namesake of Ashworth Elementary. Ashworth students prepared cards and banners for Judge Ashworth who has been ill recently.
 
Literacy in Action
The Buzz
Carter Junior High has received a $3,000 Dollar General Literacy Grant. Ronda Hay, Carter instructional facilitator, applied for the grant to promote literacy. Funds will be spent on enhancing the Accelerated Reading program.
