| Bright Smiles |

| The Smiles Dental Mobile visited Williams Elementary. More than 70 children were seen for services including X-rays, cleaning, fluoride treatment and sealants and received a free toothbrush. For many of them, this was their first visit to a dentist. Some of the children qualified for grant funds and received the services at reduced price or no charge. |

| Home of the Blues |
|
| Two bands and three orchestras from Lamar High School participated in the Blues City Classic Music Festival in Memphis, Tenn. Each of the groups earned first place in their classifications, and the full orchestra and wind symphony were selected as Grand Champions for the festival. |

| Racing for the Future |
|
| Duff Elementary and its PTA hosted the first-ever Duff Derby in May. Race day activities included a pre-race warm up, door prizes and awards, followed by the Duff Carnival with a bounce house, games and family-friendly activities. Proceeds of the race went to the Duff Track Fund, which will be used to build a one-eighth mile track on campus. |

| Lamar High School Ready, Set, Teach! Family, Career and Community Leaders of America students attended the state FCCLA conference in Corpus Christi. Shelley K. won second place in Teach and Train, and Syrenna A. and Brodricka J. won second place in Promote and Publicize FCCLA. |

| The Morton Elementary Crochet Club visited Sam Houston High School in May. While there, the Morton students learned more about sewing and how to use sewing machines from Sam Houston career and technical students. |

| Members of the Young Junior High Builders Club, formed this year with the assistance of the Sundowners chapter of the Arlington Kiwanis, handmade 38 blankets for patients at Cook Children’s. Students Alecia P., Tara P. and Marcus L. presented the blankets to hospital staff. The Builders Club at Young is the largest in the AISD. |

| The AWARE Foundation recognized outstanding AISD classroom teachers at their annual awards banquet in May. All nominees for the AWARE Foundation Award of Excellence were honored, and winners and runners-up received monetary awards. Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners! Winners (pictured) were Jessica Hall, Miller Elementary; Susan West, Arlington High School; Katy Wells, Bailey Junior High; Debi Roberts, Webb Elementary; and Valarie Yurkunas, Pope Elementary. | Martin High School’s ice hockey team finished varsity silver division play in first place with a 24-0-1 record. Losing to Dallas Bishop Lynch 2-1, the team placed second for the city title. The Warriors ranked third to begin the state playoffs and defeated Plano Senior High School, 6-3, to become Texas Cup State Champions. |

| Crow Students Jump Rope for Heart |

| Crow Elementary students raised $1,357 for the American Heart Association through their participation in the Jump Rope for Heart program. According to Coach John Sohel this is more than a tenfold increase over previous years. |
