| Martin High School wins ratings appeal to receive Recognized rating |
| Martin High School is now rated Recognized, the second highest rating in the state’s accountability system, after the Texas Education Agency granted the district’s appeal. The district administration appealed the previous rating of Academically Acceptable because of discrepancies between the district and the state in the coding of students in the Economically Disadvantaged student group. This ruling means that the AISD now has six Exemplary campuses and 33 Recognized campuses. |

| H1N1 Preparedness |
| The Arlington ISD administration wants to assure parents that the health and safety of students is always a top priority. We continue to work closely with the city’s office of emergency management and Dr. Cynthia Simmons, the city’s public health authority, to help reduce the spread of H1N1 this fall. We stand ready to respond and to take appropriate action.
The best way to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus is to take the following precautionary measures:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you get sick, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
- For prevention tips in Spanish, please click here.
If you do become sick, you should contact your health care provider. The health care provider may prescribe antiviral medication and other treatment and will determine whether influenza testing is needed.
There are three JPS School-Based Health Centers in the district available to you if you are uninsured.
For more information the City of Arlington H1N1 hotline is available 24 hours a day by calling 817-575-2846. Additionally, the CDC hotline provides H1N1 updates in English and Spanish at 1-800-232-4636.
The National Association of School Nurses has created informational fliers for parents.

| Campuses earn Exemplary or Recognized rating |
| According to accountability ratings released today by the Texas Education Agency, the AISD continues to make strides, more than doubling the number of campuses earning an Exemplary or Recognized rating. The number of Exemplary campuses increased from three to six, and the number of Recognized campuses increased from 15 to 32. That means that 56 percent of all AISD schools that are eligible for an accountability rating will be Exemplary or Recognized. Click here for more information. |

| New Immunization Requirements |
| On March 5, the Executive Commissioner on Health and Human Services approved several revisions to the “Immunization Requirements for Children and Students in Texas Public and Private Schools.” The changes to the requirements were made so that they adhere more closely to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
The changes taking effect Aug. 1 are as follows:
Kindergarten
All students entering kindergarten will be required to have
- Two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine
- Two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine
- Two doses of varicella vaccine or a written statement from a parent/legal guardian or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of varicella disease (chickenpox)
Seventh Grade
All students entering seventh grade will be required to have
- Two doses of varicella vaccine or a written statement from a parent/legal guardian or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of varicella disease (chickenpox)
- One dose of Tdap vaccine (if it has been five years since their last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine)
- One dose of meningococcal vaccine
These changes are in addition to the current immunization requirements. Current immunizations are required for registration, schedule pick-up and school attendance. More information about immunizations is available on the AISD health information page.Summer Shots for School - English | Spanish |

| Additional schools to receive Title I funds |
| Pope Elementary will join the list of 37 AISD schools that receive Title I federal funds. In addition, Sam Houston High School, Gunn Junior High, and Bryant and Starrett elementaries have been designated as Temporary Title I Schools. The two-year temporary designation will allow these campuses to receive Title I funding through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. The purpose of Title 1, Part A is to enable schools to provide additional opportunities for students to acquire the knowledge and skills contained in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and to meet the standards of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. Campuses qualify for Title I funding based upon their free- or reduced-lunch percentage. For more information about Title I, click here. |
