Bowie Quarterback Christian M. is considered one of the top five quarterbacks in Texas's Class of 2009. Christian took the Bowie Vols to the state semifinals and has become a very hot recruiting commodity. Christian has a verbal agreement to play for Kansas State next year.

Bowie sophomore, Rachel B. is a Preliminary Champion Irish Dancer with the McTeggart School. Rachel recently performed at the Chieftans Performance at Bass Hall in Ft. Worth. Rachel & several of her fellow Irish Dancers appeared on “Good Morning Texas” Channel 8 on St. Patricks Day.

Art Students Honored

Six Art students and their teachers were honored at the November 6 school board meeting for their art or photographs featured in the AISD Calendar Going Places. These students are Linna Ly, Eric Chemielewski, Chelsea Galloway, Ivan Lopez, Emmaunel Silveyra, and Alejandra Galvan. Teachers include Norm Bradford, Scott Hooker, Phil Jackson, Barbara Luciano and Justin Womack.

AP Scholars Awarded

Thirteen students at James Bowie have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams. Ten students have been identified as AP scholars, an award granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Class of 2008 AP Scholars are Arman Asgari, Duy Bui, Linna Ly, Amenemope McKinny, Ai-Lien Nguyen, Danielle Quintallia and Hannah Woods. Class of 2009 AP Scholars are James Jessup, Maykei Nguyen and Patrawat Samerit. Three students were also identified as AP Scholars with Honor, 2 of which graduated with the class of 2008 and one who will graduate in 2009. Class of 2008 AP Scholars with Honor are Dustin King and Hannah Teggatz. Class of 2009 AP Scholar with Honor is Ken Nwankwo. Congratulations to these scholars.

The Manhassett Neighborhood Association represented by Mr. Sutton selected Alisha W., 12 and Aramis D., 12 as the December Students of the Month. Aramis is on the Mayor's Commission as well as in debate and football. Alisha is also on the Mayor's Commission and participates in the Ready Set Teach program and debate. Congratulations to these students for being such great role models.

Congratulations to Tu V., 12, for winning 1st place in the Martin Luther King T-Shirt Design Contest. Tu will receive $1000 savings bond and have his design displayed on the MLK T-Shirt. Tu will be recognized at the school board meeting and be honored at the Martin Luther King Celebration on January 16 at UTA. Mr. Jackson is the art teacher.

Congratulations go out to Ben L. and Zach L. who competed at the UIL State Policy Debate Championships as one of the top 64 teams in the state. After six hours and four rounds of debate they barely missed making the elimination rounds, but let the rest of the state know that Bowie debate is a force to be reckoned with. The debate coach is Jonah Hanft.

Jeremy J., 10th grade AVID student, and Diamond S. have been accepted as a Student Ambassadors for People to People. People to People is and educational exploration program founded by President Dwight E. Eisenhower in 1956. The students will have an opportunity to study abroad this summer.

Stephanie H., 12, was honored at the annual Optimist Club "Youth Appreciation Week" banquet. The banquet is dedicated to recognizing an AISD student from each junior and senior high school for their academic and extracurricular activities. Stephanie was presented with a plaque and a $500 scholarship.

The Souljahs and Lady Souljahs participated in the State Championship in Waco, TX.  The Souljahs and Lady Souljahs once again destroyed all competitors from every corner of the State and won yet another State Championship.  This brings a total of 7 State Championships to the Bowie Step Teams. Congratulations to the Souljahs, Lady Souljahs, Mrs. Morehead, Mrs Bradham, Mrs. Marshall and Mr. Caldwell.

 

 

Student Recognition

Bowie TSA Dominates State Competition

Team Bowie TSA took 24 of the 31 available national qualifying spots in the state competition dominating the other schools. The team will represent Texas at the TSA National Championships in Denver this summer. Thirteen students received 1st place, 8 students received 2nd place, and 4 students placed 3rd. Mr. Andy Barrett is the TSA sponsor.

Lady Vols Track Team Wins Regionals

CONGRATULATIONS to the Lady Volunteer track team for winning the Region 1 – 5A Championship track meet in Lubbock. Trashonda Lemon, Jasmine Johnson, Sommer Marcus, and Briony Miller finished 2nd in a photo finish in the 400 meter relay. Taking 1st in the 800 meter relay was Sommer Marcus, Jasmine Johnson, LaQuanda James, and Tola Balogun. Briony Miller showed out in the 400 meter dash by clocking a fine time of 54.8 seconds and Tola Balogun added fuel to the fire by finishing 2nd in the 200 meter dash with a great time of 24.8. To top off the evening LaQuanda James, Briony Miller, Catarina Jones and Jasmine Johnson were very impressive by taking 1st place in the 1600 meter relay with a great time of 3 minutes and 48 seconds. These young ladies will be representing Bowie High School at the state track meet in Austin on June 6. Other team members contributing to this championship were Julie Reinwald, Breya Davis, Briana Brown and Jasmine McMorris.

Students Win in Media Fair

Greta L. won 1st place in the AISD Media Fair and 2nd place in the AISD Photo Contest. Caitlin I. won Best of Show at the Media Fair and received 1st place in the Photo Contest. Norm Bradford is their photography teacher. Rubi O. and Alex M. tied for 3rd place in the Media Fair Desktop Publishing Event. Lisa Taulbee is their BCIS teacher.

Cardboard Boat Regatta Champions

The Bowie Science Team competed in River Legacy’s Cardboard Boat Regatta at Hurricane Harbor. Five boats entered – 4 student and 1 faculty. Bowie walked away with three trophies:
1st Place Dolphin Adult class - The Plucked Duck, Captain Sam Seiberling, Crew: Michele Wilmoth, Keith Johnson, Susan Bicknell, Sherry Chaney
1st Place Titanic Award (best sinking) to Kingdom Hearts, Captain Cong Tran, Crew Kenny Cao, Mara Dillman, Dung Doan, Anisha John, Bobby Khounvivongsy, Sophia La, Quyen Nguyen, Jackie Nwaeke, Ken Nwankwo, and Stephanie Uwagbai.
1st Place High School Challenge. This is a team competition where each boat earns points for an overall score to win.
Also, Capt. John Nguyen and Kris Kindt lead their crew on Cardboard-o-matic 5000 to the semi finals. A good boat, strong team, but just missed making the finals. Check out the photo album in the Photo Galleries section.

Track Teams win District

Congratulations to Bowie High School track teams for winning the district track meet at UTA. Varsity boys and girls and J. V. girls are the district 4-5A CHAMPIONS. The J.V. boys finished second in the meet. Moving on to the next level in the women's division in Lubbock will be our Briony Miller, Tola Balogun, Sommer Marcus, Jasmine McMorris, Asja Whitmore, LaQuanda James, Trashonda Lemon, Catarina Jones, Julie Reinwald, Breya Davis, Jasmine Johnson and Briana Brown. In the men's division will be Emanuel Davis, Ananias Hudsdon, Malcolm Surrell, Brandon Waller, Marques Barnes, Derek Okafor, Kendric Graves, Chris Douglas, Xavier Ramon, Travis Evans, Dexter Linton, Darnell Porter, and Tevonte Jackson. Bowie Belles at Nationals

The Bowie Belles recently competed at Nationals in Galveston. The team received the following top honors: 1st team production, 2nd team hip hop, 3rd team lyrical, 5th team pom, 1st officer pom, 1st officer military, 4th officer jazz. Ms. Reagan Glenn is the drill team coach.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) participated in the State Leadership Conference. The results were record breaking for Bowie FBLA, as our chapter is sending a school record 13 students to the National Conference in Anaheim this summer.

Bowie Winter Percussion

The Bowie Winter Percussion team won 1st place at the North Texas Colorguard Association Championship Contest. They remained undeafeated throughout the season. Members include Ricky D., Philip W., Josh M., Ayobami A., Alfred A., Shelby N., Devin B., Rahni A. and Maykei N. Their director is Mr. Mike Moran.

Eleven Bowie athletes signed to play college sports on National Signing Day. The athletes are Jonthan Gazaille-Navy; Christian Matthews-Kansas; Dexter Linton-Kansas; Trea Hawkins-Kilgore; Travis Evan-Lamar U.; Keidrick Jackson-Midwestern; Jordan Selexman-U. of Louisiana Monroe; Jarrett Brown-Oklahoma; Caleb Carr-Angelo State; Derrick Okafor-Southwest Missouri Baptist; and Jamaal Brown-Kilgore. AVID Student Receive Honors

Three AVID senior students have been selected as Dell Scholar semifinalists. If selected as a finalist, these students will each receive $20,000 to continue their higher education over the course of six years. In addition, the Dell Scholars Program provides its students with technology, a private scholar networking community, resources, and mentoring to ensure they have the support they need to obtain a college degree. Senior receives appointment to the United States Air Force Academy

Nick E., 12 was recently notified that he has been appointed to the United States Air Force Academy Class of 2013.  More than 9,000 applicants seek the rare opportunity to be a part of the officer training program at the Academy.  Nicholas is one of a select group of approximately 1,500 to receive the honor. 

Nick is a member of the National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars and the Key Club.  Last summer he was a Texas High School Aerospace Scholar, and he is currently an International Baccalaureate diploma candidate, but this fall he will be a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy. 

An academy appointment is the equivalent of a full undergraduate scholarship valued at $403,000.  Upon graduation, Nick will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.  He’ll take his first step towards that goal this fall.

Cross Country Champions

Congratulations to Catrina J., the district 4-5A Cross Country Champion. Catrina took 1st place in the district cross country meet with a time of 11 minutes and 37 seconds, a new school record. Julie R. finished 2nd with a time of 11 minutes and 42 seconds. The cross country team finished 4th overall. The team is coached by Doris Grooms.

Outstanding Participants in the National Achievement Scholarship Program

 Eboni H., Adanna O., and Taofeek O. are among the 4,700 students who have been recognized as “Outstanding Participants” in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.  These students scored in the top 4 percent of more than 150,000 Black Americans who requested consideration in the 2009 National Achievement Program when they took the 2007 PSAT/NMSQT.Congratulations to these students and their families for their outstanding academic achievements.

E-Instruction Classroom Makeover Contest

ibThe IB Spanish IV students taught by Mrs. Katherine Grube participataed in the E-instruction Classroom Makeover contest. The students collaberatively created a video to show how one student’s discovery of technology leads the students to demand more technology, ultimately becoming successful Spanish students. Special thanks go to IB students Danh Truong and Paul Bui who headed the project, directing and editing the video, with Pat Samermit and Ryan Brown writing the script while Mary Nguyen and Christine Tran spearheaded the musical arrangements. In addition, the following students heavily contributed to the video’s success: Macey Angecheradil, Nick Engberg, Amanda Anonthysene, Crystal Nguyen, Reena Anthraper, Richard Nguyen, Kenny Cao, Michelle Nguyen, Lisa Ebraheim, Trang Nguyen, Anthony Ho, Adanna Okere, Donna Khounvivongsy, Prita Persaud, Stephanie Loh, Cong Tran, Ngoc Ngo, Diane Tran, Christopher Nguyen, and Minh Tran.

NASA's High School Aerospace Scholars

NASAThis summer, several students from James Bowie High School participated in NASA’s High School Aerospace Scholar program in Houston. Seniors Colleen R., John B. and Nick E. all participated in various tours, interactive activities and lectures from scientists at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. They researched and demonstrated hypothetical launches, lunar expeditions, mars missions, and human exploration of the solar system with the help of NASA employees and resources. Their participation in this program required several weeks of homework, projects and exams before the end of school during the 2007-2008 year, as well as teacher recommendations and a nomination from a Texas congressman. Congratulations future Aerospace Scholars!

National Hispanic Recognition Recipients

hispanic recognitionNational Hispanic Recognition Program: Senior Alejandra G. has been designated a “Scholar” in the College Board’s 2008-09 National Hispanic Recognition Program. Senior Arianna A. has been designated “Honorable Mention” in the College Board’s 2008-09 National Hispanic Recognition Program. The National Hispanic Recognition Program, established in 1983, is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and identifies them for post secondary institutions.

National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students
